Matera has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and became famous for its caves, which were inhabited until the 1960s. Matera has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 and was voted "European Capital of Culture" for 2019. Later in the afternoon in front of the church of San Pietro Caveoso with a view at Matera's old houses and the former cave dwellings on the opposite slope.
