Courtyard of the Museo Civico in San Gimignano
This is one of the most remarkable villages in Tuscany. There are still 15 of originally 72 medieval towers, representing the power of the families. The Torre Grossa is the highest of these towers and reaches 54 meters. It was built in 1311. Today it belongs to the museum and is the only on that can be visited. The wealth of the village came from a trade road which connected Rome with northern Italy and the cultivation of saffron. Since 1990 San Gimignano is recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage.
